Sermon Overview
Drawing from Matthew 5:20, Reidhead asserts that salvation requires a righteousness that exceeds that of the Scribes and Pharisees. He argues that "run of the mill religion" and formal theology are insufficient; there must be an internal, supernatural righteousness produced by the Holy Spirit. The evidence of the new birth is a heart-level purity that makes the believer "holy as He is holy".
Key Principles
Internal Reality: Seek a righteousness that is "built in" to your heart, not just "painted on" your behavior.
God’s Approval: Live for the "secret audience of One"; stop seeking the applause of religious men.
Heart-Level Purity: Target the "motives" of your heart for cleansing, not just the "actions" of your hands.
Divine Seed:Trust the "Seed of God" within you to produce a life that is "holy as He is holy."
Doing vs. Being:Distinguish between "doing good things" (flesh) and "being righteous" (Spirit-wrought).
Sermon on the Mount:Use the Sermon on the Mount as the internal standard for your "new life" character.
Cannot Tolerate Sin:Rely on the "Divine Seed" to make habitual sin an internal impossibility for you.
God’s Approval Alone:Live for the "secret audience of One"; stop seeking the validation of religious men.
